Blues Scale Workout for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #36

Download the PDF of “Blues Scale Workout

By request, from YouTube commenter @Bernduf, this week’s Exercise of the Week is a basic Blues Scale workout. Often regarded as a starter scale for those of us exploring jazz improvisation for the first time, it’s actually incredibly useful for improvisors of all levels – it can sound convincing in almost any context!

Alternative Technical Study #8 for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #35

Download the PDF of “Alternative Technical Study #8

This exercise is another one drawn from something I was practicing for an upcoming tour, which I’ll actually be on when this is published! It really tied my fingers in knots, so I figure you’d like to try it too. Some keys are trickier than others. Have fun shedding it…

Expanding Intervals #1 for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #34

Download the PDF of “Expanding Intervals #1

This week’s #EOTW is part finger workout, part flexibility exercise – a technical drill working a sequence of increasing intervals. This is just one basic permutation of how this pattern could be used – I’ll most likely publish a more comprehensive collection as I practice it more and figure out which one’s are really fun to play!

Alternative Technical Study #7 for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #33

Download the PDF of “Alternative Technical Study #7

Very often, the Exercise of the Week is based on something I’ve found challenging to play during the previous week or two. This one is based on a lick that cropped up on a recent project with the Afro- Latin Jazz Orchestra here in NYC. I added a few notes to make it easier to loop, when I was practicing it, and now I’m sharing it with you. I wrote this out in all 12 keys so I could really get to grips with the shape of the airflow across the whole phrase. Number 13 on the downloadable PDF is the original key I have to play it in.
