Chord Tone Etude #2 for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #49

Download the PDF of “Chord Tone Etude #2

For this Exercise of the Week, Bryan Davis presents a new Chord Tone Etude based on the harmonic progression of a well-known bebop standard – “Confirmation.” The note choices are limited to the basic chord tones (root, 3rd, 5th, 7th only) indicated by the chord symbols, which are included. When learning new tunes, it can be extremely useful to arpeggiate through the changes to develop a sense of the voice leading, particularly if you are not proficient on the piano, or another chordal instrument. By incorporating direction changes, and different inversions of the arpeggios, you can arrive at something “almost melodic” like this!

Quick Facility Warmup for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #48

Download the PDF of “Quick Facility Warmup

This “Quick Facility Warm Up” is the sort of thing I play everyday to get my chops moving and air moving after my basic warmup. It combines different fundamentals to let you quickly feel which areas need more attention in your daily maintenance, as well as letting you quickly get going again if you’re re-warming up after playing earlier in the day.

Melodic Tonguing Routine for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #47

Download the PDF of “Melodic Tonguing Routine #1

This “Melodic Tonguing” Routine is part of a longer routine, working on tonguing along the subdivision chain. This excerpt contains the first 3 subdivisions of the beat – quarter notes, eighth notes and eighth note triplets. The full routine will be part of a forthcoming Airflow Music book. More details about that in due course…

The exercises in this routine should be single-tongued, with the sort of smooth and connected approach you would use to play a melody, either in a solo piece or an orchestral excerpt such as “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky. Play the higher keys softly and crescendo as you descend.

Range Smoothing Routine for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #46

Download the PDF of “Range Smoothing #1

This “Range Smoothing” Routine is designed to help you build and solidify your range, while maintaining a connected approach to all registers of the instrument. To begin with, aim to sustain each fermata for 10 seconds. This is an expanding series. However, while you should practice all the keys below the start note, you should only expand upwards if you are successful in playing the fermata for the full duration. Otherwise, repeat the key you are stuck at, to develop your consistency on that pitch before moving higher.

For tips on playing more effortlessly, watch: #TrumpetProTips E08

We want to hear you playing this exercise! Video yourself playing a key or two that you find challenging and share on Facebook or Instagram, tagging @AirflowMusicNYC. We’ll repost our favourites!
