Range Smoothing Routine for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #46

Download the PDF of “Range Smoothing #1

This “Range Smoothing” Routine is designed to help you build and solidify your range, while maintaining a connected approach to all registers of the instrument. To begin with, aim to sustain each fermata for 10 seconds. This is an expanding series. However, while you should practice all the keys below the start note, you should only expand upwards if you are successful in playing the fermata for the full duration. Otherwise, repeat the key you are stuck at, to develop your consistency on that pitch before moving higher.

For tips on playing more effortlessly, watch: #TrumpetProTips E08

For this Exercise of the Week, Bryan Davis presents another Alternative Technical Study. This one is a melodic pattern adapted to the major, minor, wholetone and diminished scales. There are 2 versions – one pairing the major and diminished patterns, and another pairing the wholetone and minor variations. Great for scale recognition and fluidity moving around the instrument.

Twisted Flexibilities #4 for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #44

Download the PDF of “Twisted Flexibilities #4

This Exercise of the Week is by request, from an Instagram and Facebook post, over the weekend. Viewer Dave P., asked for an exercise to work on larger interval accuracy in fast passages. These are often tricky because you are moving into a different partial of the range, so it’s easy to chip notes. To work on this, Bryan Davis presents the 4th collection of his Twisted Flexibilities, the first to introduce “Skip 1” flexibilities to the exercise.

Inversion Therapy #1 for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #42

For this Exercise of the Week, Bryan Davis presents the first of a set of exercises known as Inversion Therapy. Not as complicated as it sounds, it’s a simple developed scale pattern on the harmonic minor which descends first then ascends in the second half, which is the reverse of how we commonly practice scales.

A Different Approach to Range on Trumpet! | #TrumpetProTips E15

Following on from the last #TrumpetProTips, about how to avoid overblowing, Bryan Davis is here with a different way to think about range on the trumpet.

If you missed the last #TrumpetProTips – “How to Avoid Overblowing on Trumpet!” – please watch it at: https://youtu.be/iV3eRn8v17Q or here.

For many of my students who’ve developed the feel for the “sigh” breath, this distance based approach to range has been very successful!
