This collection has all the odd meter flexibility goodness you’ve come to know and love, along the additional twist of a coordinated note bend in the patterns. It’s great for dialing in your airspeed, to make your lip slurs extra precise.

Download the PDF of “Chord Tone Etude #2“

For this Exercise of the Week, Bryan Davis presents a new Chord Tone Etude based on the harmonic progression of a well-known bebop standard – “Confirmation.” The note choices are limited to the basic chord tones (root, 3rd, 5th, 7th only) indicated by the chord symbols, which are included. When learning new tunes, it can be extremely useful to arpeggiate through the changes to develop a sense of the voice leading, particularly if you are not proficient on the piano, or another chordal instrument. By incorporating direction changes, and different inversions of the arpeggios, you can arrive at something “almost melodic” like this!

This “Melodic Tonguing” Routine is part of a longer routine, working on tonguing along the subdivision chain. This excerpt contains the first 3 subdivisions of the beat – quarter notes, eighth notes and eighth note triplets. The full routine will be part of a forthcoming Airflow Music book. More details about that in due course…

The exercises in this routine should be single-tongued, with the sort of smooth and connected approach you would use to play a melody, either in a solo piece or an orchestral excerpt such as “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky. Play the higher keys softly and crescendo as you descend.
