In this video, Bryan Davis presents another Alternative Technical Study. This time, it’s a pattern combining chromatics and diatonics in 3. It’s notated in 3/8, rather than 3/4, to make it a little more challenging to read. The downloadable PDF has the exercise in all 12 keys, as an expanding series. Odd Meter II-V-I for Trumpet (or anybody!) | Exercise of the Week #20

Download the PDF of “Odd Meter II-V-I” For this Exercise of the Week, I’m fulfilling another request – this time from Brian White who wanted an odd meter II-V-I to work on. This is a little outside of the things I usually practice, so I found a pattern in an old notebook and edited it from 4/4 to 7/8 – included in this is a few details about how I went about that. I can’t believe we’re up to the 20th EOTW!!! Check back every Monday for a new Exercise of the Week! #EOTW #GoPractice If you have questions or comments about this video, we want to hear them! 4 Bar Developed Scales for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #18

For this Exercise of the Week, Bryan Davis presents the “4 Bar Developed Scale” drill. Based on the static tonguing exercise, the “5 Bar Exercise”, this takes the rhythmic pattern and applies it to a simple developed scale pattern. There are 2 versions included – the same rhythmic pattern as the 5 Bar Exercise, then the next subdivision along the chain, with a bar of 8th note triplets, then 16th notes, then 16th note quintuplets. Don’t freak out about the groups of 5 – they’re not any more difficult, just less familiar than 3s or 4s. Target Practice for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #17

Bend & Flex #1 for Trumpet | Exercise of the Week #16

For this Exercise of the Week, Bryan Davis presents a set of exercises he’s been using lately to level up his own flexibility practice, by adding half step note bends into traditional lip slurs. This is a short set, just between the 2nd and 3rd partials, but the principle could be applied to any group of partials.
